Guide to Protecting your Water Source

water

Irrigation systems installed on your outside tap can create undesirable conditions that cause water to flow back into the water source. To prevent back flow in domestic garden settings, UK Water Regulations advise fitting a double check valve applicable to the fluid category the system relates to.

The installation of a DB Valve is required for micro-irrigation systems (fluid category 4) and a BA device (fluid category 5) is used for domestic pop-up sprinkler systems. Both systems should not incorporate the use of insecticide or fertiliser from the emitter.

Fitting Guidance

• Install directly to the outside tap or at least 300mm above the highest point emitters in the system output.

• Fit the valve AFTER a water timer or mechanism with a ball valve. These components are classed as a shutoff device that creates back pressure forcing water to leak from the backflow prevention valve.

• Install the backflow valve where it can be easily accessed for replacement and organise annual checks to be made by the installation company.

• Install the unit in a vertical position observing the direction of water flow and maximum working pressure.

Before installing an irrigation system, please contact your local water provider for approved plumber schemes who can advise you which device is required.
